Once upon a time, our grandparents ate and bought everything that was locally grown or made, resulting in tight sustainable communities where citizens supported their local businesses and restaurants. Today, our world has become so interconnected that even in the heart of Melbourne, one is likely to find an orange grown in California rather than the Sunshine State itself.
The ability to get anything anywhere is a great testament to how far we have come but it can come at a price of polluting our environment from the carbon footprint we are leaving behind. We see local businesses struggle to complete with national chains however we believe the tide is shifting.
The "Buy Local" Mantra
Often the best way to be environmentally friendly and supporting your community, buying local means just that: purchasing items near your home (in your city, state or country), preferable things that were grown, assembled or manufactured nearby.
SUPPORTING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
By purchasing food and other goods that are produced locally you are stimulating the economy in which you live in. Jobs are created or retained within the community.
KNOWLEDGE OF SOURCE
Purchasing locally means that you know a bit more about the product, the producers and makers. Foods and products have been grown or produced to meet Australian requirements.
When you buy locally it means that you help minimise greenhouse emissions and costs associated with delivering your goods.
